Even though cricket has changed in recent times with the emergence of T20 cricket, chasing almost run a ball target for fifty overs is still a tough assignment. Today, set against 287 after terrible bowling performance, Indians lost Virender Sehwag early but Gautam Gambhir, following on his good innings in last match, put together the foundation with in-form Virat Kohli. MS Dhoni, noticing poor form of young Rohit Sharma, promoted himself but his slowish innings pushed the asking rate around 8 an over and then Lasith Malinga ate up both Gambhir and Dhoni in first over of the batting powerplay to turn the match around. Thankfully, Suresh Raina and Irfan Pathan steered visitors home through some inspired batting display.Earlier, Sri Lankans got lucky with the toss and decided to put runs on board but not untill first three batsmen had returned to pavilion that their innings got going. Experienced pros Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene added 121 runs. both missed their century but late counter attack from Angelo Mathews and Jeevan Mendis pushed home team to a solid total.
This was first defeat for Sri Lanka at the venue having scored more than 250 runs. Also, this was biggest chase by any team on Sri Lankan soil.
