PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The College Access Center provides one-to-one educational counseling services and targeted workshops focused on college options, in a community-based setting, to 1,400+ teens each year, including 250 high-school seniors and young adults who complete the college-application process and enter college from our SW-Bronx community, with good retention. All programs are designed to assist neighborhood youth and young adults in overcoming barriers to higher education, staying on track through high school & taking the steps necessary to gain admission to college with financial aid.

Responsibilities:
POSITION DESCRIPTION The full-time education counselor will plan and conduct one-to-one college-counseling sessions; facilitate educational workshop series; develop and conduct orientation sessions for parents; work with the director on outreach to community members and organizations; build partnerships with diverse educational institutions and organizations; conduct student intake, staff group trips to college campuses; maintain records on students? involvement in the program and their progress toward educational goals; and support program alumni who are now in college to stay on track toward graduation. The counselor will be supervised by the College Access Center Director. The Center staff includes additional counselors, part-time teachers, and volunteers whose goal, as a team, is to expand the cohort of college-bound teens ? and college graduates ? in our Southwest Bronx neighborhood, where only 9.8 percent of adults over age 25 have a bachelor?s degree or higher.

Qualifications:
EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Previous experience in community-based youth development, education and/or social work with a focus on youth work, higher education or other directly-relevant field. B.A., B.S. required; at least two years of teaching, related training and/or counseling experience highly desirable. Strong commitment to strengthening a program and an environment that supports the academic achievement and access to higher education of youth and adults of low income, immigrants and others who will be the first in their families to attend college. English/Spanish bilingual skills are a +. Familiarity with NYC public schools, especially middle and high schools is a plus. HOURS: Weekdays, 10- 6pm + some nights and Saturdays.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Annual salary range is low $30,000s, negotiable, depending on experience. New Settlement offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k).
