ACS Doha International School appoints Susan Leese as Early ...

ACS Doha International School is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Leese?(pictured) as its new Early Childhood Principal.

Leese brings extensive experience to ACS Doha with more than 15 years of classroom teaching and curriculum development, with a particular focus on inquiry-based learning and child-initiated play.?As Principal, Leese will be responsible for providing effective educational leadership to the Early Childhood division, ensuring positive learning outcomes for both students and teachers.

Leese?s previous educational experience includes 12 years teaching at ACS Cobham and ACS Egham in the UK. In 2011, she joined ACS Doha International School as an Early Years Teacher, subsequently being promoted to Early Childhood Principal in 2012.

Susan is currently completing a Masters degree from the University Of Bath, UK, where she also obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Education that included International Education, Curriculum Studies, Understanding Learners and Learning studies.

?I found Susan?s creative vision of leadership, her love of children and deep understanding of how they learn, and her genuine enthusiasm for working with both children and adults in ways that enhance community, utterly compelling. I am delighted that Susan will be leading our Early Childhood division,? said Diane Hren, Head of ACS Doha.

As part of Susan?s new leadership, the Early Childhood Development division at ACS Doha is introducing a new integrated teaching approach to music, art and drama. This involves students further exploring a discipline, such as Art, and extending the learning into literacy and physical development. For example, instead of the students just learning about shapes in art class, they will use stories on the subject and become ?shapes?. This teaches them involvement, engagement and motivation. It also works towards developing their critical thinking and creativity. Through imagination and theatre, they will turn art pieces into life experiences.

Arts Integrated Instruction has become an area of great interest over the past decade as schools are discovering the power of the Arts when used as a catalyst for teaching across the curriculum.

?Arts integration is not about artist residencies, or occasional arts projects that connect to other curricular subjects, it is about a methodology and a philosophical approach to education that creates a level of personal connection and added depth in the classroom through a creative inquiry-based process of teaching and learning,? says Susan Leese.

?Our students were asked to make a plane ? as part of this, they were also asked to act out the plane, from take-off, to flying and landing,? explained Leese. ?They will become the plane through their movements, taking on the shape and action of a plane, this will help them understand size, structure and movement,? she added.

At ACS Doha International School, every student is inspired and challenged to reach their full potential. An Early Childhood education supports the crucial development of a young child?s cognitive, social, emotional and physical abilities, ACS Doha focuses on the development of the whole-child in a language-rich and caring environment that encourages active participation and meaningful learning.

ACS Doha is bringing the philosophy and approach of their established UK schools to the Doha campus and combining them with a programme that integrates the local traditions, culture and history of Qatar.
