Such a week with the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, and the US national elections are thankfully just a few days away. Time to decompress, de-stress, turn off the noise of politics, and enjoy this week?s fabulous collection of food photos and recipes.

Cioppino (it?s pronounced chuh-PEE-noh) is a lovely fish stew, easy to make, perfect for chilly nights ? some background info from Wikipedia:
Cioppino is a fish stew originating in San Francisco. It is considered an Italian-American dish, and is related to various regional fish soups and stews of Italian cuisine. Cioppino is traditionally made from the catch of the day, which in the dish?s place of origin is typically a combination of dungeness crab, clams, shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels and fish. The seafood is then combined with fresh tomatoes in a wine sauce, and served with toasted bread, either sourdough as bouillabaisse, burrida, and bourride of the French Provence, suh or baguette. The dish is comparable to cacciucco and brodetto from Italy, as well as other fish dishes from the Mediterranean region suquet de peix from Catalan speaking regions of coastal Spain.

Despite a poor recipe choice, the feijoa scones turned out ok. I made the feijoa jelly last night using the discarded skins. It was the first time I?d ever canned something ? I am so happy it set and the jar sealed (yes it is an old pasta sauce jar?).

The Feijoa or pineapple guava is an egg-shaped fruit with a thin lime-green skin. The flesh inside is cream-colored and encases a jelly-like center. The texture is gritty, close to that of a pear. The flesh tastes like a combination of several other fruits, usually described as pineapple, guava, and strawberry. Some people report a taste similar to that of a quince or lemon. Feijoa is native to South America, but is now commercially grown in New Zealand and California.
Feijoas are most often eaten raw. The fruit is ripe when it is slightly soft and the jellied inner section is clear. The fruit is unripe when the jelly is white and is spoiled when the jelly is brown. Unfortunately, this test of ripeness may only be determined once the fruit is opened. Peel the fruit before preparing, as the skin is bitter.

Baked apple crisp. On days when I?m too lazy to make a crust, I just sprinkle rolled oats, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon over sliced apples and bake them for 35-45 minutes.

Pasta that will let you cry tears.
Grab a pack of smoked trout, 4-5 of those red tiny chilies you see above (imported from Thailand), 2 tablespoons low fat creme legere with herbs, 1 teaspoon fresh finely grated horseradish, and a small red onion.
1. Cook the pasta according package instructions.
2. Flake the smoked trout into a bowl.
3. Finely chop the red onion and chillies, mix them into the trout flakes.
4. Add the creme legere and the horseradish and mix well.
5. Season to taste (careful with salt as the trout is already salty).
6. Toss cooked pasta in the mixture and serve.

Boil pasta. Sauce is made from stir-fried onions, courgette (zucchini), and mushrooms. Once is almost done, add milk and flour to thicken sauce. Serve.

This is a Cherry Cheese Cake. Recipe below. This is what it looked like at first. Then I looked at the picture and it had a ring of cherries around the edge, so I tried to do that. The next picture is the result of that. P.S. Ignore the fresh cherries to the right. The recipe called for canned pie filling so that?s what we used.
Royal Cherry Cheese Cake Recipe
Crust:
* 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
* 6 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened
* 3 Tbsp. granulated sugarFilling:
* 3 8-oz. packages of cream cheese, softened
* 3 eggs
* 3/4 cup granulated sugar
* 1 tsp. vanilla extractTopping:
* 1 21-oz can of cherry pie fillingPreheat oven to 375?F. Brush bottom and sides of the spring form pan with melted butter. Chill in the freezer until ready to use.
Crust: Using a fork or pastry cutter, blend all crust ingredients together in small bowl until well mixed. Press mix firmly against bottom and sides of a 9? spring form pan.
Filling: Using low speed on a mixer, cream together sugar and cream cheese from filling ingredients. Add eggs one at a time and beat well into mixture. Add vanilla and lightly beat until well blended. Pour filling into crust.
Bake at 375?F for 40-50 minutes.
Chill thoroughly for at least 2 hours and decorate with pie filling before slicing.

While I?ve heard about black rice, this is the first time I?ve seen it. Photographer postbear provided this background info:
Thai black rice, Ox Head brand. It?s sticky and I use it for rice pudding or ohagi. friends gave me a bag of tiny red beans and I?ll cook them up later tonight (I made the black rice and some sticky white rice earlier) so I can make a bastardised ohagi type dessert.
It works in sushi, too ? I prefer mixing the sticky white with black rice or a bit of brown just to vary the flavour and look of the roll. The night before last I made several rolls with cucumber, some nukazuke pickles, pickled ginger, daikon and some other bits and bobs.
The sushi can be made to look very elaborate and detailed if you are careful with the layers ? looks impressive, but the ragged screw-ups taste just as good.

Roasting brings out a deep, mellow sweetness in sometimes-sharp or bitter root vegetables, and roasted turnips are no exception. For best flavor, use young little turnips instead of the baseball (or larger!) size ones. If small enough, simply quarter the peeled turnips. But if using some larger ones, just make sure all the turnip chunks are roughly the same size. This recipe makes two to three hearty side servings, and there?s no reason why you couldn?t multiply the quantities to make more servings. I served this with crab cakes tonight, but the German-inspired flavors would also pair well with bratwurst and other German dishes, as well as roast chicken, roast beef, steak and brisket. A dollop of sour cream (or nonfat Greek yogurt) or creamy horseradish sauce would certainly complement these turnips.
