Odd-Even Gas Rationing New Jersey - Business Insider

@swoodruff

12 counties in New Jersey will begin odd-even rationing at noon on November 3.

The gas situation is so out of control in New Jersey, Governor Chris Christie has mandated odd-even rationing?to start at noon in 12 counties.

"As New Jerseyans continue the long process of recovering from Hurricane Sandy, it's imperative that our families have secure, reliable access to essential supplies like fuel.?Right now, the impact of the storm, particularly the continuance of widespread power outages, has created the disorderly sale of gas ? including long lines, out of operation stations, and stations facing shortages,? said Governor Christie. "This system will ease the strain on those gas stations still operating, while we work to bring more online for the public to access fuel, in a manner that is fair, easy to understand, and less stressful.? ??

The order will take effect in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Monmouth, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren.

For those unfamiliar with the process, here's how it works:?

On odd numbered days those with license plates ending in odd numbers can buy gas. The following day, those with even numbers can make a purchase.??

Zero is considered an even number, while those with personalized plates are considered odd.?

We've seen gas lines go on for at least a mile and have heard of people waiting anywhere from one to seven hours (many camping out at stations to be first in line when they open) just to fill tanks and cans. At the least, the odd-even mandate should bring some relief to the wait at the pump.

During the 1970's energy crisis, odd-even rationing was also in effect due to the lack of gas because of the Iranian revolution.?
