Duties & Responsibilities
Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) seeks an experienced chief
communications officer to provide leadership in all areas of communications. Having moved from a division to a school in 2007 the critical
role SEAS plays in the education of our students has been highlighted and is a priority in the upcoming University campaign. The Executive
Director of Communications will play a critical role in communicating the School's vision and strategic plan to key stakeholders as well as
noteworthy news and events.
Reporting to the Executive Dean for Administration and serving on the Executive Management Team,?the Executive Director of Communications:
- Oversees the external and internal communications activities of a school comprised of nearly 100 faculty, 1100 students, and 500 staff/researchers, and as such is the School's official public information officer.
- Provides strategic leadership for communications as part of the School's development and alumni relations activities (including integration with leadership at the University level) and helps to direct branding and positioning for the forthcoming Harvard Capital Campaign.
- Serves as a liaison to offices and departments throughout the school and University and, in particular, collaborates strategically with Harvard Public Affairs and Communications Office, the Faculty of Arts and Science, and other Harvard schools and institutes on communications priorities for the University (such as innovation, translational research & development, sustainability, and global impact) and ensures the proper representation of the school in all high-level messaging.
- Enables a platform for internal and external communications and marketing related activities for the School's functional areas, in particular Student Affairs (e.g. tours, recruitment videos, Visitas); Human Resources (e.g., internal e-letters, award support); Facilities (construction updates); Events (e.g., announcements, invitations, day-of-materials); and Finance (Annual Report).
- In conjunction with the Executive Director of Computing, works to develop a sustainable web/digital communications strategy for the school and link such efforts to the University's digital endeavors.
- Provides support for high-level, high-visibility events in collaboration with the Events Director and affiliated stakeholders.
- Manages the Communications Office.
A Bachelor's degree plus a minimum of 10 years' experience preferably in a university environment working with all aspects of communications including admissions, development, alumni relations, student advising and technology transfer. Experience translating science and engineering into lay-friendly language is essential as is experience ghost writing and speech writing. Supervisory experience. Experience with web technologies is also required.
Additional Qualifications
Master's degree in a related field preferred.
